GENETIC REGULATION OF TRANSCRIPTION
Poplars are fast growing tree species that are native to North America, and a potential source of renewable biomass for bioenergy, pulp and paper, and timber production.
Our Goal
Develop elite poplar cultivars that are adapted to grow in the Southeastern US, for biomass production.
How are we doing this?
We are phenotyping and genotyping a large population of unrelated Populus deltoides individuals.
Individuals are being ranked for their genetic potential for biomass production and chemical properties, and resistance to the main pathogens.
What is next?
The most promising genotypes were identified and are being crossed to develop a breeding population for future generations of genetic improvement using a combination of traditional and genomic selection.
Who funds this work?
This project is funded through the USDA McIntire-Stennis Program, and other sources including the University of Florida.
